Grow

Growing your own food is a powerful and freeing experience. From a small seedling to something you can harvest, it reminds you what you’re capable of and connects you to the land and our community. Whether you’re growing in a garden, raised bed, or a few pots, it’s a simple way to build confidence and take ownership of what you eat.

ProTip: Not every seed will grow—and that’s okay. Just keep planting them!

How to Grow Plants from Seedlings – Inside

Starting with seedlings is one of the easiest ways to grow your own plants. Follow these simple steps to help your plants thrive!

Gather Supplies & Prep Soil

Seed packets, containers (trays, pots, or egg cartons), and seed-starting soil

Fill containers with soil and lightly moisten it (not soaking wet)

Plant Seed

Plant seeds about 2–3 times as deep as their size

Gently cover with soil

Water & Give Light

Keep soil consistently moist using a gentle spray

Place in a sunny window or under a grow light (12–16 hours of light daily)

Keep Warm & Watch Grow

Keep in a warm space (65–75°F)

Seeds will sprout in a few days to a couple weeks—once they do, keep giving them plenty of light

How to Plant Seedlings Outdoors

Once your seedlings are strong, it’s time to move them outside and let them continue growing in the garden.

Choose the Right Spot

Pick a location with 6–8 hours of sunlight

Make sure you have easy access to water

Check spacing needs so plants have room to grow

Prepare the Soil

Loosen soil about 6–8 inches deep

Mix in compost if available

Water the soil lightly before planting (not too wet)

Plant Your Seedlings

Gently remove from container (hold by the leaves, not the stem)

Dig a hole slightly bigger than the roots

Place in the hole and press soil gently around it

Keep Warm & Watch Grow

Water right after planting (gently)

Keep soil consistently moist for the first week

Give them a little extra care as they adjust to sun and weather (they might look sick, they are just adjusting to the new sunlight)
