It Was an Average Wednesday in June... I was head

It Was an Average Wednesday in June...

I was heading to the garden to water the plants when I heard a commotion by the school across the street. A group of kids from the garden were over there, so I went over to see what was going on. As I got closer, I saw two 10-year-old girls in a heated fight. I stepped in to break it up and invited one of them to join me in the garden.

We picked some early flowers and sat together for a while. As we talked about the fight, her anger slowly melted away. When she was calm, she got up and headed home.

Fast forward three months to the last day of the garden program. The staff and I were gathered around the fire pit, debriefing the day’s events, when those same two girls walked into the garden together. They sat next to me, smiling and chatting about their plans to hang out later and how much fun they were going to have.

I couldn’t help but smile back. Just a few months ago, these girls were fighting. Now, they were friends.

This is why We Got This matters. It’s more than a program; it’s a lifeline for building community. It gives kids a chance to grow, learn, and connect in ways that ripple throughout the neighborhood.

In 2025, we’re setting a big goal: to give 125 kids a week a paid opportunity to make their neighborhood a better place by caring for its physical spaces and building a stronger community.

One of the team members at We Got This had the great idea of having a gift give out for kids to come and pick up gifts for their parents. At We Got This we love helping kids see the rewards of their hard work. Part of the reason why we work is to share that with the people we love. Today at the garden, kids who worked in the garden over the summer had the opportunity to come and pick out gifts for their parents or other family members. This was made possible by generous donations from the Shorewood Community Network, @foodrightinc , @milwaukeepubliclibrary , Porchlight Book Company, @iamjriley and several other individuals that chose to be part of the We in We Got This.

Know A Business That Wants To Be Part Of The We In

Know A Business That Wants To Be Part Of The We In We Got This?

We Got This is a volunteer run organization and proud of the fact that nearly 100% of the donations made by individuals goes directly to paying kids for their work in making their neighborhood a better place to grow up in. In order for our summer program to function, we rely on the commitment of a small group of adults who are also compensated for their work leading groups on Saturday mornings. These adults are members of the community surrounding We Got This and are incredibly committed to our kids.

We Got This is currently looking for business or corporate sponsors to help provide the compensation of those adults. This year, the board has set a goal of averaging 125 kids a week. In order to manage that many young people we will be utilizing 10 adults to lead small groups. Each adult costs the organization $1,500 for the summer.
